Growing up, my brother and I played all kinds of games on the Nintendo Wii, but few had the charm exhibited by one of the console’s greatest, slightly obscure gems: Kororinpa, from the now-defunct Hudson Soft.
When going to university, I wanted to ensure an unconditional offer with a new game to show off, and I experimented about with a mobile game about rolling a ball around a maze. Although the phone idea never took off in my mind, I found instead that it worked incredibly well with mouse controls.
Given the inspiration, I decided to dub this project a fangame based on Kororinpa. The working title was Kororinpa 3, considering the original had a sequel, but eventually an unexpected addition earned it the name Kororemix.
This was around the time I was experimenting with save data, and I was feeling particularly ‘programmy’ that day, so I added a fully functional level editor in a single day, and made that one of the ‘selling’ points of the fangame, made possible with the same ‘Blueprint System’ that I would later use in Pathmaker for it’s own level and character editors.
