For my Final Major Project at university, I knew from months prior what kind of project I wanted it to be: a fighting game. Specifically, a platform fighter that adapted my ongoing work, ‘Project Altera’, into the start of a proper on-screen universe.

Of course, with graphics identical to Pathmaker, it isn’t quite Arc System Works, n’or would it ever reach the minimum level of other games, but it’s still a straight-up adaptation of my story, where the latter game was more of a toy box without rhyme or reason.

I already had a good idea of how it would work on a technical level, so as soon as I was able, I set to work, adding Pathmaker’s version of Ruby as a ‘test’ character, before moving on to the first true fighter, Kusaka Kabashima. From there, I added Helias Rael, Ruby Kabashima and Alex Smith, bringing the fighter count to 4 (non-clone) fighters before the deadline.

Right now, the gameplay is completely identical to Super Smash Bros., save for the lack of grabs, taunts and many other mechanics. I want to change this in the future, and I’m sure I’ll think of something, but it’ll do for now.

Until then, I’ll just slowly hammer away, adding a few more characters over time before releasing a public build to itch.io. My dream is for the entire roster of ‘Project Altera’ to one day be fully playable in HERO v HERO.
